I love these little Octis [Och-ties], and they seem to be so popular with everyone. I have them out in a basket at my events and they always get a lot of attention. I make them in all colors, bright and cheery. With safety eyes, without. With smiles, without. People can't seem to get enough of them!

Here I'll write down how I create them so you can have them, too! Watch the videos below so you can create your own swarm of Mini Octis!

Let's get started!

To start, the body.(0:00-1:47)

What you'll need:

  1. Cast your yarn onto the 22 and create 30 rounds, cast off.

  2. When you have your body you're going to cinch both ends and double up (like a beanie), secure the tails. (:35 in the video)

  3. Put your safety eyes in, stuff and cinch the other side closed (:35-1:47 in the video)

You have your body!

Now the tentacles (1:48-3:50)

What you'll need:

Crochet terms:

  • MC - magic circle

  • SC - single crochet

  • CH - chain

  • HDC - Half-double crochet (3HDC - 3 stitches in one)

  • FO - fasten off

  • ST - stitch

  • SLST - slip-stitch

Round 1: SC 8 in MC, SLST to first stitch

Round 2: In same stitch, CH 21, 3HDC in second CH from hook and in each remaining CH, SLST in next ST on base (60)

Repeat round 2 until you have 8 curly tentacles, FO, leave a long tail for sewing

Now the assembly (3:50-5:10)

I like to draw the tail through the center of the base and into the center of the bottom of the octi (3:50) and continue sewing around until it's nice and secure. Tie and hide the tails.

Sewing the mouth (5:10)

Take your black yarn and sew the mouth of your choice. I chose to make a cute amigurumi mouth in the shape of a "V."

You're all finished!! Go and make all the mini octis you can make!
