Sloppy Joes from The Homeplace

I've been making my sloppy joe sandwiches differently for years since I decided to stop buying the canned stuff. Now, I think I may have found a recipe to which I want to stick!

Sloppy Joe Sandwich

Sloppy Joe sandwiches may not be the most popular food, but oh man are they delicious. And easy! You can cook this up in about 15 minutes; just brown the meat and mix in the sauces. You can doctor them up as fancy or as simple as you like. My sloppy joe sandwich taste is simple: mustard, cheese, pickles, mayo. My boys like tomatoes on them, and my youngest loves adding Chick-Fil-A sauce. You can use a tortilla instead of a bun, or no bread product at all! Every mom needs such a versatile and delicious lunch or dinner recipe.

It's important for me to have a few quick and easy recipes on hand. I'm the stay-at-home-homeschool mom who also tries to have her own little business AND help her husband with his business. So, easy dinners are a MUST in this house.

I've been becoming a huge fan of mixing sausage and beef to make certain dishes. Sloppy joes, cheeseburger pasta, hamburger steak. I think the addition of a little ground sausage gives the dishes a different, more interesting, and better, taste. I've also been adding ginger to more and more things (sometimes turmeric, also), but if you're not a fan of it then leave it out.

When I came up with this specific recipe, I didn't have any Worcestershire sauce to put in like I normally do, so I tried vegetable broth. Oh man, it was a great decision! Extra sloppy, extra delicious! All my boys inhaled their dinners. That's when I decided that I had to share this!

Enough talking; let's get to the food!

For this recipe you just need a few simple things that you probable already have at the house, things I make sure we have in stock at all times.

I try my best to measure everything when I'm writing a recipe, because I don't really measure when I'm cooking anything else, ever, especially seasonings. My ancestors tell me when to stop a lot of the time. That said, if these measurements don't work for you, try more or less. It's your taste, your dinner. This is what I love about sloppy joes; you can't really mess them up!

Sloppy joe Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 1/2 lb ground sausage

  • 2 tsp onion powder

  • 2 tsp parsley

  • 1tsp ginger

  • 8-10 tbsp ketchup

  • 4 tbsp mustard

  • 1.5 tbsp brown sugar

  • 1-2 tbsp vegetable broth

Other needs:

Skillet

Hamburger buns or tortillas

Chips

Broccoli or other veggies

Cheese, mayo, tomatoes, pickles

Instructions:

  1. Place the ground beef and sausage into your skillet and brown over medium heat. Drain the grease.

  2. Add the seasonings and stir

  3. Add the ketchup, mustard and brown sugar. Stir well.

  4. Add the vegetable broth and let simmer for a few minutes, while stirring occasionally.

  5. Remove from heat and make your plate!

So simple!
